The start to the third decade of the 21st century has been an unfortunate one. We are entering 2020 while facing one of the most significant pandemics since the HIV outbreak in 1981. COVID-19, or Coronavirus, is a type of respiratory disorder that severely damages our lungs. The epicenter of the n-Cov epidemic was in the Wuhan region of China. The COVID-19 is a contagious disease that spreads through direct contact. That is why governments all over the world are stressing over the procedure of self-isolation.

Self-isolation means spending most of the time at home away from people. You can come out of your houses only to buy essential stuff or in any emergency. Considering the impact of Coronavirus, it is crucial to break the contagious chain of infection as soon as possible. Therefore, isolation comes to rescue in hard times. It is a boon for the introverts who love avoiding people and living on their own. We can learn from them to live a healthy life while facing a pandemic.

How to Follow Self-Isolation Routine?

The isolation routine comes in effect with the lockdown procedures. During a lockdown, all the services in an area come to a halt, except for some vital things. The essential services include food, dairy, medical aids, security, etc. To stop the further journey of infection, people can not form a crowd. Therefore the government will cancel all the public events. The airports, shipping ports, and public transportation also come to a halt eventually. Moreover, every citizen should stay at home to prevent the spread of the disease.

During self-isolation, most working professionals get the opportunity to work from home as the offices are no longer functioning. Only vital workers, like medical practitioners and security personnel, can leave their homes. Civilians can go outside, but they need to maintain a distance of at least 2 feet among them.

Why is Self-Isolation Needed?

Coronavirus can easily infect large masses. The virus spreads by the droplets of cough or sneeze of an infected person. The biggest problem is that it is not possible to detect the virus immediately. We have to wait for 2 to 14 days before the symptoms start to become visibly dominant. During that period, the infected person can come in contact with hundreds of people, and no one will ever know. However, if we maintain a safe distance and stay isolated, the chances of getting the infection reduce to minimal levels. Therefore, self-isolation is a critical weapon in destroying the chain reaction caused by contagious diseases like COVID-19.

Is There Any Difference Between Isolation and Quarantine?

Yes. Isolation and quarantine are two very different processes. We follow self-isolation before getting infected. Quarantine, on the other hand, is a technique to disinfect people who have been in contact with someone carrying the virus. Even if you have a travel history of visiting an infected place, you will put in quarantine to check your vital stats. If you do not show any symptoms during the incubation period, you are good to go. However, if the symptoms start to develop, you will be put in complete isolation to start the cure.

What to Do During Self-isolation?

Try to stay away from other people. There is a risk of others getting the infection from you. If you cough or sneeze, use a mask or handkerchief to control the droplets. Maintain clean personal hygiene to get rid of the virus from your hands and clothes. Wash your hands regularly. Finally, do not come in contact with anyone until the symptoms start to settle.
